Relationship Matrix

Relationships are based on two important foundations: the hierarchy between the partis and the status of the relationship. Combined they give you a quick overview of the type of relationship the negotiation will lead to.

Horizontal + Exclusive
You both have the same level of power in the relationship and you are the only ones in your assigned roles.

Horizontal + Open
You both have the same level of power in the relationship and you are not the only ones in your assigned roles.

Horizontal + Complicated
You both have the same level of power in the relationship and you may or may not be the only ones in your assigned roles.

Horizontal relationships are only possible when both parties see themselves as having equal power in the relationship.

Vertical + Exclusive
You do not have the same level of power in the relationship and you are the only one in your assigned roles.

Vertical + Open
You do not have the same level of power in the relationship and you are not the only ones in your assigned roles.

Vertical + Complicated
You do not have the same level of power in the relationship and you may or may not be the only ones in your assigned roles.

Vertical relationships are the only option when one of the parties hold more power over the relationship than the other.

Nebulous + Exclusive
The power levels between you fluctuate and you are the only ones in your assigned roles.

Nebulous + Open
The power levels between you fluctuate and you are not the only ones in your assigned roles.

Nebulous + Complicated
The power levels between you fluctuate and you may or may not be the only ones in your assigned roles.

Nebulous relationships mean that there is an intention that the power of holding the upper hand fluctuates between the parties through out their relationship.
